The Quiet Sea
A Novella by Tom Richards
To
save himself from certain death, an Old Man (Jake Cowley) flees to Dursey
Island, a place with no communications to the Mainland of Ireland. There, he
makes himself known as Tommy O’Neill, an alias that fools the Village Islanders
into thinking he’s a fisherman. Using his experience of fishing in the Gulf
Stream, Tommy and a young Islander, Donal McCarthy, are almost killed when a
giant shark destroys their small boat. Donal voyages back to Dursey knowing
Tommy will succumb to his injuries.
On Dursey, as Tommy is dying, he tells them the truth: he is a
wealthy man. Jake rewrites his will leaving Donal and his wife Judith a fortune
to rebuild the Village and Educate their children. Jake dies and when the
Couple read the Will they find that he asks them to bury him near the Old
Church cemetery with a simple headstone carved with: HERE LIES JAKE, DIED 20
MAY 1973 AND GRACE & MARY CROWLEY, DIED 20 MAY 1963. KNEEL AND REST A
SPELL. “Life is short but also sweet. My wife Grace lies next to me.”
When the Villagers and the Priest dig a whole in the ground, they
discover an old coffin. The wood is rotten but the Brass Plate is as good as
new. It reads: GRACE CROWLEY 20 MAY 1973, RIP. Lifting off the remains of the
coffin top, they find a woman and child who have not decomposed but instead are
as perfect as the day they were both murdered. In her hands she hold a Rosary
and a single Red Rose – a flower that is as fresh and as fragrant as the day it
was picked.
When Jake finally dies, he is buried with his wife and daughter. The
carving on the family’s new Monument reads:
HERE LIES JAKE CROWLEY, DIED 20 MAY 1973 AND
GRACE AND MARY CROWLEY, DIED 20 MAY 1963. KNEEL AND REST A SPELL.
“Life is short but also sweet. My family lies next to me.”
