The Rising. A New Novel by Tom Richards
"Captivating!" is how one of the first readers of my new novel put it. Captivating is a word I might use if I had not written this very difficult novel about Unites States justice.
Set in the 1950s and located in the State of Florida, the story follow a whtie man by the name of Peter BlackieJones. Living near a swamp in a town not far from one of the largest cities in this state, Blackie married a white woman and had a daughter of mixed race. Their marriage was more than a success even though most white people called Jackie a failure all the time.
When this man was accused of raping then murdering his wife and daugher (who was only a teenager), Blackie the man turned to drink as a way of hiding. When he was finally arrested by a corrupt sheriff (who was one of the real perpetrators), Blackie Jones spent years in the Florida State Prison which was controlled by a Warden, one of the badest, toughest Wardens in United States history.
Knowing he was condemned to fry on Old Sparky, the state electic chair, a white woman lawyer said she would defend him or nothing. "Nuthin at all?" the uneducated man asked because he couldn't believe it. "If you say so, Ma'am."
Based on true events and true stories, this novel also includes actual quotes from a number of famous Black Politicians and religious leaders of the time including Martin Luther King.
